So basically he didn't know it was anything extraterrestrial, but he could probably suspect that they are going to go extra wacky on the timeline just to test his bullshit, which kinda backfired.
Don't want to take away a lot of his credibility due to guy having a rich enough history for CIA to be interested with him - overall pretty funky story.
