Deep down, an open arms/open borders liberal has a much lower opinion about refugees than the hardened 'right winger' and proponent of tough measures on immigration.
The latter will suggest that the refugee stay in his country and try to improve his situation, or bluntly admit he doesn't care.
But the liberal cannot even conceive of a third-worlder possessing the skills or intellect to help himself. He must abandon his country and culture and set out for greener pastures.
To the liberal, these downtrodden people are helpless invalids with no prospects for a brighter future unless they abandon their homes and come under the patronage of superior people and cultures.
