People don't understand genetics & these companies capitalize. Could be they take your money & use a dartboard map. But probably not. I don't think scam is right.
There's no Scottish Gene for example. These can rarely tell you heritage. It's too mixed up so it's just comparative by location samples available. And ethnicity is more about culture & location than blood. I know that triggered /Pol/ but it's true. There are some markers more related to this or that group. And they've gotten good at determing some basic phenotype items like eye color, but it's really pretty pointless.
I know for a fact I'm almost all Irish ancestry. One test confirmed that. One said German. One said fucking Turkey. I can only assume they have a poor database & got a lot of samples of mixed Turkish people. Lot of traffic thru there.
Memes aside, there usually isn't that much difference genetically between "races" or ethnic groups. It's more about cultural identity. And phenotype can be very misleading. We're all closely related. At least genetically. They don't have the tech or database commercially available to tell you much useful info.
