>could you name a person who was considered your "greatest hero"?Americans have a huge mythology built up behind the Founding Fathers, which is why even today you'll often, in arguments over the Constitution, hear their names invoked as support. Pretty much any of the more popular Founders could be considered heroes for what they did, especially Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, and Madison.
Without a doubt, however, the greatest hero of the U.S. is George Washington. He became a celebrity through his actions during the French and Indian War (known as the Seven Years War if you're European) (1756-1763) and was nominated to be commander of the armies by John Adams in 1775, 2 days after the Battle of Bunker Hill and about a month after the Battle of Lexington and Concord. He saw us through the war and, upon winning the war, very famously resigned his commission to Congress, because he believed that the military required civilian control.
