For about 2 years I had this utopic vision of being able to do work that you choose to while being compensated regardless. Then I envisioned some sort of polygamous breakaway tribal society trying to exist separately from this industrial behemoth. Both very misguided, but I still think quite cute conceptions.
I think you are correct in saying it's been like this since the Industrial Revolution. I can count myself lucky in that I was never explicitly forces to work, as there was always enough money in the family to sustain me. So in a way I got to live life worry-free for a while, but I just turned to abusing video games and drugs. And message boards (it wasn't even this place, that came slightly later).
Welp, guess it's time to get off my ass, round out my portfolio, touch up my CV and apply to some jerbs. I could climb a bunch of arbitrary corporate ladders if I truly put my mind to it.
