a lute was intended to be strummed while a lyre was intended to be plucked on string at a time (old lyre designs look more like harps than the violin or the guitar). the violin does the same and it's why the bow is intended to play only on one, sometimes two strings at once, while the guitar switches between strumming all of them and individual plucking
there's overlap between them because they're both in the string family, but the intention of how they are played signifies the different branches. pic related is a byzantine lyre dating from 1000 A.D., as you can see it is using a bow similar to the modern violin
