Pressing yourself to the limit and making yourself less capable of pursuing that ideal is the error. If we were meant to be capable of more right now, we would not have the limitations we do. Struggling is good, because struggling is an opportunity for growth. If there's no opportunity for growth because you've become too weak to struggle, you're not struggling to be good, you're struggling to hurt. That's called masochism, and it's a bad thing.
