study all religion, pick books that are interesting to you and so forth and then carefully cherry pick what you will.
someone might say cherry picking is bad but it's very important to master especially in an age where more information is uploaded in a week than you could study in a lifetime.
now, there are books and things that you could begin on and that might be a little bit more useful than the front page of CNN. some extremely important texts are for example the corpus hermeticum and all of it's 18 books. not only because of the great wisdom and historical influence but because hermeticism and gnosticism in general lay a good (the best) foundation for this type of thing.
