gravity generates a magnetic field around a planet which deflects solar winds that would other wise strip away gases from the outer atmosphere. Venus has a weak magnetic field so its gases are being stripped away. Mars has no magnetic field, it still has gravity but its not magnified by an active core only from the fact that mass generates gravity. so all of its water on the surface and in the atmosphere has been stripped from it.
