The US enjoys a major geopolitical advantage because we're a net food exporter with some of the most fertile agricultural grounds in the world. To maintain this advantage, the government has supported farmers to an incredible degree. Lobbyists for big agriculture have lobbied to tell the Food and Drug Administration what is and isn't nutritious. Apparently high-fructose corn syrup is extremely nutritious and should be included in everything.
So our food is really sugary and really really cheap.
