Oldfag here, and I was in high school around the time that movie came out. (A bit after, but still...) the movie is and was a classic because it showed characters looking beyond their cliques, making friends with people outside of their circles without fear of what other people would think of them.
I can see where none of this applies today in schools filled with badly behaved nigger monkeys, pronoun police and faggots, because sane White people want no part of that. But the movie resonated in 90% White America.
