In most modern media, Oni are romanticised to resemble humans with horns, supernatural strength, and a strong desire to fight and code of honour. Traditionally, however, they are not only supposed to have a larger build than that of humans and look like distorted, ugly versions of them, but also be brutish and evil creatures, and, typically, not very smart.
You could say the message they were supposed to represent changed with time, from respresenting the ugly side of humanity (bandits, barbarians, warlords) to representing resolve and ambition, and thus being made beautiful again.
