It's a concept that's covered quite a bit in religion and philosophy; you can't change quite a lot of things in life, but you can change things within your power. Turns out, there are a LOT of things not in your power these days. Your friends and family degenerate and you don't want them to be that way? You want an education for a job more to your character? You want YOUR roof over your head? For the average person, all of these goals are actually very dubiously attainable, if at all. It's not their fault. It's not my fault. (((Society))) will keep being gay and retarded, we'll say "No" to it, and it'll keep doing whatever it wants until it can't.
Some people need to take responsibility for themselves, other people need to release responsibilities over things that are not theirs. I fell into the latter, probably because I was raised by parents who were the former. I only have a responsibility to myself and anything I see fit because I'm able to and I want to, not because of some unwritten duty.
