Holding eyes contacted is a sign of threat, because you are not "respecting" the authority.
Pretty much you cannot look at your mom, dad, elder sister/brother, or elders in general in the eyes. It is a sign of defiance if you're of an inferior rank/level/authority. Also, shows who is the "alpha" is any interaction.
I don't look at my mother in the eyes, my sisters don't look at me in the eyes because I have higher authority than them.
