Sure, you could say that it's from an extremely advanced age or something, but that is fetching it far, could be literally anything at that point. Which I guess is the nature of these theories, I mean, it very well could be anything.
I think a brain in a jar would be the best torture method, more than anything. Imagine trapping somebody with their thoughts and no way of expressing them or perceiving the outside world even, just trapped there and occasionally dreaming until the brain stops functioning. Sounds like a bad way to go.
