Satan wanted to *be* God, a desire that is both unwarranted and impossible to fulfill. And so he fell. And now God uses him to test mankind. Woe to the Lightbringer, who was once the greatest of all God's creations, and is now fallen into eternal filth, disgrace, humiliation and misery.
