The main show is about him figuring out a way to get into his original body and keeping guys away from his love interest before then. Occasionally he makes some progress with it but after 1000 episodes, he definitely hasn't returned to normal. Still I didn't find it formulaic but I've only seen 250 of the episodes and stopped a while back. Their mysteries are always really good imo and all the hints are within the two episodes.
