He then gave them the ultimate exercise of that free will by making Adam aware of the tree of knowledge of good and evil and that he would certainly die if he ate from it. Adam and Eve gave into temptation and ate, gaining the knowledge of evil and how to commit it. This was known as the fall of man. It means that all of their descendants so all of humanity is born with original sin, an imperfection which causes them to sin and thereby cause suffering. God has not abandoned humanity on this matter however as people can choose to follow natural moral law and their conscience but some choose to exercise free will and not listen to them.
