However as a trend, the peoples of Sub Saharan Africa were extremely underdeveloped. The Songhai Empire is an exception, but was still not comparable to Muslim and European Empires of the time, and arguably the Songhai were only even able to exist in such a way because they coopted Arabic language, as well as Islamic law and practices, as opposed to native Sub Saharan voodoo poopoo worship.
