The Christian religion was called Christian from about 300 AD when the Christians didn't want to be confused with Jews, who pissed off the Romans the third and final time.
Then 1000 AD there was a schism between the Churches of East and West. While both Churches had the qualities of being orthodox and catholic (universal), they became proper names used to distinguish the two churches.
Similar to how democratic and republican were qualities of governments and became proper names for political parties.
Then the Protestants came along. They are not Christian NONE of them accept Christ as Lord. Every single one of them denies the Lord in Matthew 16 and John 20. And the bible itself preaches if you do that, reject a part of the scripture, you reject it all. Thus, Protestants aren't Christian
