The average guy was a farmer or some other type of peasant that rarely saw money. Owed more than he made. Spent everything he got.
I'd guess recently in the US, say mid-1900's the average american probably had some savings, but I doubt they kept it in physical silver.
speaking of which, found some silver from the 1800's today. That stuff is extremely rare. I find about one silver coin every 5 years. Today was the day. I was detecting a ghost town midden where I had found a seated dime about 20 years back, and I found another one! Same spot. Somebody just dropped some silver in the trash I guess. Picrelate, today's silver find. Might just go out and screen the whole midden to see what else is in it.
