Japan has a completely different culture than the West and it doesn't always translate well. Even American and British comedy are quite different.
For new anime fans I try to select anime that speak beyond cultural peculiarities and break the stereotypes that anime-haters often cite.
Spirited Away got popular (practically mainstream) in the West despite taking place largely in a public bathhouse. How? Because it appeals to something innately human that transcends any particular cultural nuances.
