They literally started fake websites to discredit the top experts and well poison, for when people did their own research. Then some redditor "expert" finds it, tells everyone in their thread, now 500+ people believe it.
That's the problem with NPCs - it's never a search for truth. There's a fundamental flaw in their decision making process. They want to believe what they want to believe. Say something they feel uncomfortable hearing, they will cancel you to make it all better purely on instinct. This all ties in with what Ted was saying about oversocialisation, the internet isn't helping either (excluding 4chan).
