both i suspect but the first hurdle has been with setting. i know i want to split damage into 3 distinct categories for a multitude of reasons, so the line i was gonna do it down was physical (ie good ol steel swords, ballistics), magic/elemental, and something technological.
i like the idea of hardlight melee weapons, but it leaves me quite wanting for a ranged option that works off similar tech to that it can be effected by similar mechanics. my first thought is something like photon guns but my concern, which bulgaria verified, was that it sounds super outdated.
