I think people back in the day understood for the most part what we were doing was a bit. The Internet was supposed to be a separate place where magical things could happen and we would just act retarded because it was funny. By the 2010s Net culture in general changed and there became this stigma in being an absurdist or nihilist.
Then Gamergate happened and millions upon millions of people from communities like this got swept up in a frenzy that became a pillar of the Trump movement which fucked up everything for the rest of the decade.
I do see some return to the absurdism and lately for the last year or so I have been trying to bring it back in my posting style. Gamergate is behind us, a new wave of posters are coming in with no memory of those times, and the Trump era is over. But I don’t think we will ever completely recapture the spirit of 2004-2009 times.
