If you were floating in a complete vacuum in 0g in a hypothetical universe where nothing exists except you. And you took a very very heavy weight and threw it, which direction would you go? That's the principle rockets work on, except with a controlled explosion instead of one heavy weight since your speed is limited by how hard your can push, and a controlled explosion pushes pretty hard.
Think about it, again you are in space, 0g complete vacuum, you put a grenade inside an indestructible pot and hold the bottom of it against you, which way are you going? Now just make the top of the pot smaller and smaller till theres just a small area the explosion can escape from, swap the grenade for something slightly slower burning and you have a rocket.
