As a language teacher I don't really recommend duolingo. I think it's fine as a supplement to book/classroom learning or immersion, but it doesn't do much more than teach vocabulary. You can't get a grip on the complicated concepts like pronunciation and grammar without interacting with someone who speaks both your own language and the targeted one. This is also true of the more committed software courses like Rosetta Stone.
You're going from one Indo-European language to another, so I bet you can still figure out a lot of the hard stuff if you put your mind to it. However, trying to pick up an Asian language by software or go to English FROM an Asian language is not recommended. I have a coworker who's half-assing Vietnamese on his smartphone and he can't say shit no matter how high his percentage goes.
