You'll notice yourself if you attempted to scare people with gore and whatnot, that nowadays almost nobody gets bothered by it unless they're really young, and even then. I'd say that in the past it was like how you said it, but time has passed on. People really just don't care anymore, I think it's comparable to how people online used to be extremely easy to scam and fool back in the day, but in the current age it's significantly harder. I think that same kind of immunity has built up, and maybe because of the extreme overstimulation pretty much everybody gets from being terminally online, at this point. I don't know exactly why, but from what I've seen, it's how it is.
There's also the morbid curiosity that a lot of them naturally have which brings them here. Not because they actually like the imageboard format or are looking to get anything out of this place, but more so because it's the no-good baddy bad place to be in, at least in their view because of what they've been fed by what they consume. That's why you see people using the place more like a substitute Twitter and very rarely actually talking about anything. At least that's how I figure it.
At the end of the day, I think you're right in that the people here a notch above the absolute surface level person that you can find on the internet, but that still doesn't make them much on their own. They're very mediocre and generic nonetheless, and the anonymity does a good job of giving you the illusion that it's not the case.
But anyhow, I guess that's just how it is with literally every place that's mainstream, the majority will always be pretty soulless and copies of one another. Character limit.
