Quick way to remember this 666 is the number of the beast 66 is the number of books devastated in the protestant bibles (or you can remember order 66 from star wars)
The original catholic bible consists of 73 books (7 and 3 are godly numbers ) 73 -7 = 66 (you remove 7 because its a holy number)

Christianity was always like this, when the conflict between the modern beliefs and what is written in the bible get to hard they change the bible first by using the best interpretation of ancient words (slave becomes servant) then by just removing texts from it.
