This sounds fucking stupid, but every single person I've ever met who was full-blown homeless was either addicted to drugs, an alcoholic, or just plain fucking crazy. And I've known plenty of fuck-ups in my life who ended up on the streets and it was all because of some substance abuse problem or a mental problem they refused to seek treatment for.
If you ever find yourself out on the streets and you're otherwise normal (not a substance abuser and of sound mind), there are plenty of places that will take you in and help you find a job and a place to live. The catch to these places are that they have rules and they're usually NOT that strict about enforcing them which goes back to my first point: If you're on the street, it's because you choose to be. If you fuck up bad enough to get thrown out of a shelter, it's obviously because you're either on some type of substance or fucking crazy or both.
There are exceptions to every rule, of course, there are older guys who got laid off and have to live on the streets and they obviously aren't crazy or drug addicts. I can't explain why they're on the street, but they are, I've met them, they're solid dudes who lost work and most of their family is either dead or live a billion miles away, as far as why they don't go to a shelter, I have no idea, maybe there are age restrictions or something.
