4. Information in DNA
The discovery of DNA revealed a profound truth: life is built upon an intricate code, containing vast amounts of information. The human genome, for example, contains instructions equivalent to millions of pages of text. Information, by its nature, is immaterial and always originates from an intelligent source. Just as a book requires an author, the complex instructions in DNA require a designer.
Atheistic materialism offers no satisfactory explanation for the origin of this information. Random mutations and natural selection may account for variations within existing genetic material, but they cannot explain how the genetic code itself came into being. This code, with its precise instructions, points to intentionality and design.
Orthodox Christianity provides the answer: DNA reflects the wisdom and purpose of God. Life is not an accident but a creation imbued with meaning. As Psalm 139:14 declares, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” The information in DNA is evidence of the divine Logos, who ordered creation and sustains it.
By acknowledging the divine origin of life, Orthodox Christianity not only explains the existence of genetic information but also affirms the intrinsic value and purpose of human beings. Atheism, which reduces life to mere chemistry, cannot account for this profound reality.
