>>9515849I wonder how much of that is cultural too, since Japan has a reputation of being the father of what we consider to be the modern fantasy game or RPG, where quality still very much mattered back then while also creating games for the masses. I mean the original Zelda was enormously popular in Japan yet was considered back then and is still considered now to be a masterpiece.
Oh, and my example of BioShock wasn't to say that the game itself was bad or anything. I still think it's a fantastic experience full of atmosphere, great characters, and lore. It's just that that one thing that a lot of people highlight wasn't as innovative as people claimed it to be.
