A devout European or American Shintoist in Japan will know and practice his religion better than any Japanese person in a foreign country with no cultural or linguistic connection to Shinto. On a side note, many roman emperors were foreigners and adopted foreign successors, yet they still practiced the state religion instead of worshipping their ancestral Gods.
