Also, unlike say, cocaine, you can't 'escape reality' using psychedelics. You're forced to acknowledge things about your existence that make you uncomfortable. So if you're all fucked up, your trips will be too.
This is why opiate-users and coke-heads don't touch the stuff, and why borderline / psychotic / depressed people avoid it like the plague.
Pyschedelics are literally just useful mind expanders / self-improvers for people who are straightened out and who have most of their shit at least somewhat together already.
