What they called "sun" was actually three celestial bodies tidally locked - in one line - from the perspective of Earth. They were Saturn, Venus (as a comet - it gave light back then) and then Mars. It was referred to as "sun" all over the world, however it was not the same sun we have today (Sol), which is a new celestial object in Earth's neighborhood.
