I just look at it as layers of reality, of which we normally see only a thin sliver. I have had numerous full blown OOBE's, totally non drug related. It is spoopy in the initial stages where you are in sleep paralysis and after that when you are stumbling around like a drunk astronaut in "the ether". After that I have only had joy and ecstasy over the freedom I felt.
But I can see how some young individual who "brute forces" his way into alternate states of consciousness via drugs can have a bad time. The mind is vast. We are vast. Your little temporal ego cannot withstand expansion unless you are prepared for it. Have a scaffolding of understanding for what lies beyond.
I studied esoteric shit when I was a teenager and brought about OOBE's that way, so I wasn't shocked or afraid, only gassed up af and extatic over it happening.
