For one, their intelligence about the materials state of the soviet army and industry was absolutely ABYSMAL, they thought the soviets could only raise a extra 50 divisons when in reality they raised more than 10 times that number.
Second, they didn't even know how they were going to win, the entire operation was up for hopes and prayers that the Soviets would just give up, but they didn't... mostly because nazis acted like fuckin animals in the eastern front instead of trying to win heats.
