The day promised to be beautiful, the sun is shining, the birds are singing... No singing accompanies me as I head towards the village of Xizruthtlilu, in the southern outback, the former territory of the principality of Alharda, of which there is no trace anymore. I am supposed to replace a provincial guard who has been missing for a long time and find out what could have caused his disappearance.
- Well, at last - I sighed to myself when I saw the column, which was already too familiar, because it was placed everywhere: The symbol of power of the Council of Seven. From a distance, I could already tell that this vale was dedicated to Felaoia, one of the appendages of the leader of this enlightened assembly. The column itself dominated the now visible peasant buildings.
I passed farmhouse after farmhouse and so far I have seen no one, though this was to be expected, it being perhaps four in the morning. A medium-sized apple tree has been planted in front of this towering landmark. However, it is difficult to say what was put there first.
Tired from the long journey, I decided to relax by sitting under the tree and eating some fruit. As soon as I leaned against the bark, which felt nice to the touch, I felt the stress disappear from me, melting into the air. This was accompanied by the singing of a bird flying towards me, at which I smiled blissfully. I already thought that there were no flying creatures here.
However...
Earlier, a seemingly cheerful winged visitor fell silent, hitting a not so small tree. Surprised, I grabbed him as he fell hard to the ground. It was obvious that he was stunned, but still alive.
- Well, boy, as you can see we both fell here like idiots - I stated bitterly. I laid him down on the grass and leaned my head against the bark again.
