Around twelve, I learned to also right in the normal way, but still use my retard grip most of the time. Same thing for gook sticks.
Normal grip is only better for writing in cursive because you can more easily make continuous circular strokes that flow into one another. My way, it's easier to draw precise horizontal/vertical strokes that make printed letters look neat and consistent.
I switch between grips depending on what I'm writing and have two separate handwriting/signatures. This level of autism comes in handy when signing anything you might later want to claim as forged ie. checks, lease agreements.
