"Scientist" has become a term among midwits to replace "smart." so we literally have people entering the field of "science" just so they can be officially labeled "smart," even though they are just average. How can a society progress if the inventors are all average... wouldn't that just make us stay the same/regress? Science has become a religion with popes and priests like Neil Degrasse Tyson, Bill Nye, and many other celebrities who have no inventions/discoveries, yet are the arbiters of science culture. Joe Biden "believes in science."
