If you have enough time to make carefully aimed "wounding shots" then it's argued that you were neither fearing immediate danger to your life, nor were in a state of serious panic, meaning it can be argued that your use of a firearm in the first place was unwarranted and therefore illegal.
"Shooting to wound", "warning shots", etc. have no basis in US legal code. Self-defense/Concealed Carry classes will tell you to unload every single bullet in the magazine into their center mass, even in cases where you know they're dead/down after 1-2 shots. If you do anything else you open yourself up to life-ruining criminal and civil prosecution.
