I don't know about studying nip with it, dolls use speciffic for them phrases that sometimes make sense. Like, Sui says ~desu, Hina says ~na no and Gin is a piece of garbage. Shouldn't be a really big obstacle, just saying, so you know. Have you read Yotsuba&? Should be a good one to learn on, it's simple and enjoyable.
So, as a way of learning moon, I have no clue, I don't really know the runes. Yet, you should still watch it, it's a good show. Regardless whether you'll watch with or without subs.
