DAY 1, BOOT CAMP, 1988, joining the CAF. My unarmed combat instructor began the very first class with a speech that went something like this:
"If you find yourself in a situation where you are unarmed, ARM YOURSELF, because any man with a weapon is ten times more dangerous then a man without one. And it doesnt matter what that weapon is, a pipe, a fireplace poker, a heavy ashtray, a ball point pen, a rolled up newpaper, a belt, a piece of eletrical wire... pick up ANY object you can reach, ANY WEAPON IS BETTER THEN NO WEAPON."
Ive been in a few fights over the years. thankfully nothing life threatening. But he is absolutely right. ARM YOURSELF.
