The economy of the federation makes no sense if you think for two seconds.
What we are shown in the show is from the point of view of the starfleet officers zipping around in their ships and their space stations.
By definition these people are the tip top best of the best of the federation and in the human's case, of humanity.
They are true believers in the whole system and enforcers of it.
We see they get personal replicators and holodeck time and they basically work where they live which is a military vessel and the accommodations are basically static and divvied up by rank and familial need if those families are on their ship. Even the people not in starfleet we are shown are the best of the best in their fields.
But there is nothing ever given to how does the average joe get something.
How did Sisko's father own a restaurant? How did Picard's family own a vineyard?
This is land, this is location, this is resources and all for what? To provide services for free? how do you acquire that stuff plus resources? Do you simply ask? Then how do you KEEP it? Is it because they had it before the federation crystalized and got rid of money and they were somehow able to hang on and keep their lands and belongings?
Does that mean there is no upward mobility for humans on earth? you're fucked?
So many questions about how that economy works that are never asked or answered by the show because a moment scratching at it makes all of its preachy bullshit about money fall apart. That's why you only ever see the best of the best of that society.
That's why the Ferengi, thanks to DS9, are the only star trek race that make any sense.
