word. i have to imagine it stems from executive pressure not to let any students fail so they do this sort of thing to keep irresponsible outliers in line, then get frustrated when students complain that the professor's extra work is a detriment.
either that or for some reason it's a common sentiment that all students are too retarded to succeed if you don't keep them on a short leash
