We even know about many deep-sea creatures and the semi-mythical giant squid's appearance, in spite of how little we know about the ocean floor.
If the American government wanted to alarm us about aliens, they could probably easily pull off something amazing with CG or with some weird unseen machine prototypes. It would be something that any regular person could believe.
