Even when presented with factual information it doesn't matter, what matters is what everyone else believes. Most people don't look at information in a filter of true or false, but in if the filter of if the group believes it or not, so they don't get kicked out of the group for wrong think. If you depend on society, social approval and social acceptance then you will just conform to whatever beliefs that are allowed in the framework of continuing your existence safely within the group.
