As for your question it really depends on were you are but that's mostly dependent on human nature and the fact that most people don't want to take care of others without getting something in return and that's not inherently selfish especially if your struggling to make ends meat already.
There's plenty of stay at home dads though which I'm personally fine with especially for sons because it's good for them to have a father figure around in my opinion.
