I personally believe the stars are also behind the firmament while only the moon and sun being inside. Let me Ask you what does a sea look like at night when there’s 0 light on it? Pitch black dark. And what does it look like when the light is on it? Bright blue? Hmmmmmm. It’s almost like there’s a big clear sea above us. Just a coincidence though.
