there is a tidal type nature to magic in the setting where it has periods of low magic and high magic.
the eldritch abominations turn up in the period leading up and the peak of that high magic era, so in the low magic times they prepare.
it uses the concept of true names too, and the evil eldritch things dont start with names. sentient, sapient beings r called name givers, for only they have the cognizance and ability to identify symbolic language, and to apply names to things. so for those horrors to affect our world, they need to start by doing small and shitty things until they become such an issue people are aware of them and they work their way up to being real defined beings.
so in essence they are things that may exist until naming them makes them exist. and they derive nutrition from the suffering they cause. that is very cool and much better than shitty mindflayers or the dnd far realm (shit realm amirite ayooo LOL)
